In a world where The Correct Punishment for having Harmful Opinions is social and material punishment and needing to bend the knee to people who hate you and whose moral authority maybe you never aligned with, attempting to reflect on your own opinions feels impossible, because admitting you were wrong feels like giving someone you distrust ammunition to humiliate you. And I know these are melodramatic brainworms, but this has to be how some other people experience the world psychologically, and I suspect a lot of them also grew up in the same religious and ideological belief systems I did.
