Ah, you already made the fundamentalist comparison in the comments here! Yeah. We didn't grow up fundamentalist ourselves, though we did grow up with Catholic Guilt, where the Guilt part remained even when we had left the Catholic part. Which has its own way of shoving you down toxic paths going "if it HURTS it means that it's the TRUTH and it's WHAT YOU NEED" but... is not as overtly authoritarian or "we have the right to compel everyone to do the same things as us."
And yeah, definitely have seen the kind of leftists who fantasize about "what if re-education camps, but WE got to run them." A lot of the time, I distinctly have the impression that I'm probably going to be better able to communicate with a run-of-the-mill left-of-center moderate than with someone who shares my views on welfare and socialism.
